Social networking has gained in popularity and scope over the last decade. With the meteoric rise of websites like Facebook and Twitter, more and more people and businesses are getting involved and opening accounts. Each of these social networking giants each have millions of users that interact and form groups and connect for any number of reasons.

One very well-known and respected social networking site that is more geared towards today’s working professionals is LinkedIn. LinkedIn is, by their own definition, a place where currently over 70 million professionals can go to “exchange information, ideas and opportunities”. It is a great tool for creating and finding professional networking opportunities by taking advantage of your pre-existing relationships with former classmates, co-workers and colleagues.

LinkedIn is free and is a great resource for people. It is especially good if for individuals looking for employment or thinking about a career change or improvement. They can connect directly with someone they know and by extension, with all of their LinkedIn contacts and so on. Recent College graduates definitely utilize LinkedIn as a tool to help them find a job.

This site provides a simple user interface and signup is fast and easy. Users can form groups and can share a wealth of knowledge, tips and advice on all types of useful information.

Social networking is basically the action of interacting with other people in a social group. Before the popularity of the web, your social networking group(s) consisted of those people you came into contact with daily including your family, friends, people at your workplace and so on. Whether online or face-to-face, social networking is a great way to interact with others and to share ideas, advice and lots of other useful, and sometimes, not so useful information.

In today’s technology-driven society, online social networking websites have been gaining more and more popularity over the years. MySpace used to be the most popular social networking and but now has been bypassed by websites like Facebook and Twitter. There are literally millions of people participating in online social networks from all parts of the globe. They are a great way to reconnect with loved ones, old classmates, old co-workers and just about anyone else you could think of. Some sites are geared more towards personal connections while others, like LinkedIn are strictly for business networking.

Most social networking websites have some of the same features in common. Users go to the website, sign up for an account and begin to use the sites tools and features to develop and tweak what will essentially be the users online identity. All social networking sites allow users to post information about themselves but some allow users a lot more options for personalization. Sites like Facebook allow users the ability to publish everything from pictures, movies and music to their profile so they can share with others.

There is no denying that social networking websites are here to stay. For most users they are a fun, useful way to express themselves to the world in a digital format. More and more businesses and agencies are utilizing social networking sites to inform others about their products, services and causes. Either way, they are a great medium for promoting things or just venting depending on how users choose to use them.

Some believe that social networking online is just a natural progression of human development as we become more and more infused in technology. It makes sense that people, being social by nature, would gravitate towards this means of communication and social interaction. It is an exciting prospect to see how social networking continues to grow.

In today’s fast-paced, technology driven society, alternate means of communication have been included in our daily lives to help us have up to the moment information about just about anything. There has been an ever-increasing buzz about social networking for the past few years that has firmly established this form of communication as one that will continue to grow. Depending on how people choose to participate in social networking, it can be a huge resource and benefit or a major detriment to their offline social lives.

Earlier forms of online social networking mainly consisted of IRC chats, which are still very popular. Today, internet users have more sophisticated online networking gateways that allow a plethora of other functionality like file sharing, video and audio sharing, applications and games.

Many businesses are beginning to realize the commercial potential social networking represents. Entire networks of friends, coworkers, family members and business associates use online social networking to share information, make recommendations and communicate. For businesses this activity takes the age old “word of mouth” advertising to all new heights since potential new customers are far more like to buy a product or service based on the recommendation of a trusted source like their old high school buddy or a previous coworker.

Social networking is also a great tool for establishing real networking ties with professionals across a broad spectrum of industries and specialties. The potential for making valuable business ties is enormous.

On a less commercial note, social networking allows people to reconnect with their friends and family quickly. It’s very easy to catch up with an old teammate or military buddy through online social networking. Many people even find relationships with others that share similar interests or have other friends in common. It’s a great way to keep everyone updated on the things happening in your life including weddings, children and other special occasions.

The only major drawback with online social networking is that, in some cases, it reduces the number of real-world, face to face interactions some people make. It has also been blamed for a drop in productivity from people in the workplace since some are spending too much time networking and not enough time working.

Effective business networking is the linking together of individuals who, through trust and relationship building, become walking, talking advertisements for one another.

Keep in mind that networking is about being genuine and authentic, building trust and relationships, and seeing how you can help others.

Ask yourself what your goals are in participating in networking meetings so that you will pick groups that will help you get what you are looking for. Some meetings are based more on learning, making contacts, and/or volunteering rather than on strictly making business connections.

Visit as many groups as possible that spark your interest. Notice the tone and attitude of the group. Do the people sound supportive of one another? Does the leadership appear competent? Many groups will allow you to visit two times before joining.

Hold volunteer positions in organizations. This is a great way to stay visible and give back to groups that have helped you

Ask open-ended questions in networking conversations. This means questions that ask who, what, where, when, and how as opposed to those that can be answered with a simple yes or no. This form of questioning opens up the discussion and shows listeners that you are interested in them.

Become known as a powerful resource for others. When you are known as a strong resource, people remember to turn to you for suggestions, ideas, names of other people, etc. This keeps you visible to them.

Have a clear understanding of what you do and why, for whom, and what makes your doing it special or different from others doing the same thing. In order to get referrals, you must first have a clear understanding of what you do that you can easily articulate to others.

Be able to articulate what you are looking for and how others may help you. Too often people in conversations ask, “How may I help you?” and no immediate answer comes to mind.

Follow through quickly and efficiently on referrals you are given. When people give you referrals, your actions are a reflection on them. Respect and honor that and your referrals will grow.

Searching out a networking site, building a profile and collecting contacts can be time-consuming tasks. You’re a business professional, so why would you take the time to do all of this when you’ve already got a job to do? Why bother with networking at all? In one word, marketing.

Unless you’re willing to spend extra time searching, you probably won’t get a bevy of contacts through having a professional networking profile alone. But even if you do nothing else but fill out a profile, you are getting your name out there in a very tangible and meaningful way. You’re self-promoting, and in the world of business self promotion is extremely important and necessary. By simply putting your name on a professionally-toned networking site, you’re distinguishing yourself. In business, sometimes that’s all it takes to get the ball rolling and get yourself recognized.

Having a professional profile online means you have a link which you can pass out to other professionals to let them know more about you. It means your name is part of the online world, so you can be searched on Google and other popular search engines. A professional networking profile means exposure and opportunity. What could be better for business than that?

Successful Professional Networking

There’s no point in participating in professional networking if you aren’t going to do it well. You should treat professional networking the same way you would treat any other business venture — the objective is success. But what defines success when it comes to professional networking?

Are you a business success if you have a huge list of professional networking contacts? Have you found success if you’ve found a way to build a huge base of online friends and connections? While having lots of contacts is all well and good, it doesn’t necessarily mean you are reaching a sought-after business goal.

If you want to meet new people, business professionals like yourself, professional networking is a great way to go about getting it done. You can build up a base of career-oriented people, the uses of which may be limitless. Simply having a network of working professionals from a variety of different fields can be useful. You can contact these people perhaps for services, tips, advice and a bevy of other uses. But even when you have no real interest in networking or meeting people, a professional social network can serve a purpose.

Once again, the answer is marketing. There is no price you can put on the value of self-promotion in the business world. Getting your name out there, leaving a mark and making yourself available are the hallmarks of business success. Achieve this and you’re bound to do well.

Are you looking to meet someone “on the Internet?” If so, there are a few important things that you should know.

In the past, relationships were largely developed through chance meetings, setups from friends, or from friendships that flourished into love and eventually marriage. More and more people rely on the internet when it comes to finding romance.

When many individuals go in search for love online, they head to online dating websites. Did you know that online dating websites are actually social networking websites? What sets online dating websites apart from traditional social networking sites is that all the members in a dating website community are generally looking for a relationship. Social networking websites focus on many different aspects of life, which makes it easier to find and make connections with other people who share common goals and interests, including love.

When you join a traditional social networking site, one that allows almost anyone to join, it’s hard to tell what a person may actually be looking for. A large number of network users are looking to fall in love, while others are looking for friendships. Online dating websites help to eliminate confusion and awkward moments because they are created and maintained for a specific audience – people who are looking to actually meet, date and make a life-long commitment.

Most online dating websites allow a
<ins><ins></ins></ins>limited number of views of its member’s photographs with a condensed version of their personal profile. Paying for a membership then allows you to read the entire biography and learn more about the person and whether you want to contact them or not. The first point of contact will probably be through email exhange. The second would be phone conversations or texting where a more personal exchange of information occurs and then then deciding to arrange a first date. Some site members call them meetings rather than a date and ask if the other has any objections to going dutch.

Perhaps the most important thing to remember is that internet dating is not one hundred percent safe – although it’s important to note that, depending on the circumstances, no form of dating is truly 100% safe because that fine-looking person you met at the local bistro or dance hall could be just as weird or as dangerous as the man or woman you met online. Take a few precautionary measures when surfing for dating sites; don’t be too quick to give out a lot of personal information. Take it slow. . . verrry slow.

Naturally, you’ll want to be cautious because first dates can be scary, reeally scary. . . especially with someone you’ve never met before. Just because someone says they are who they are doesn’t necessarily mean that they are telling the truth. If at any point during your conversations you feel that you are speaking with someone who is making you feel uncomfortable or not telling the truth, end the conversation.

For many individuals it is enough to chat with others online, but for some it is not enough. Whether you are asked to meet with an online friend or if you initiated the meeting yourself, you are advised to be cautious. For safety reasons, it is advised that you speak with one of your online friends at least one month before agreeing to meet with them. If and when that meeting does take place, have it in a public place, like Starbuck’s. And offer to go dutch so that neither feels pressured to pay for a meal. If your meeting does not go as planned, you can ensure your safety by having others around you while you finish your coffee and politely leave.

There are plenty of social networking website choices as they have expanded significantly over the past few years with membership numbers ranging in the millions. This would definitely put the odds of finding someone in your favor. In fact, you could probably find more than one!

By understanding the importance of being careful with your life and being aware of your surroundings there’s no reason why

Social Networking – perhaps you’ve heard of it before, but are not quite sure what it means.

Social networking is the grouping of individuals into specific groups, like small rural communities or a neighborhood subdivision, if you will. Although social networking is possible in person, especially in the workplace, universities, and high schools, it is most popular online. This is because unlike most high schools, colleges, or workplaces, the internet is filled with millions of individuals who are looking to meet other internet users, to gather and share first-hand information or experiences about any number of topics, from golfing to gardening developing friendships, or to start a professional relationship

When it comes to online social networking, websites are commonly used. These websites are known as social sites. Social networking websites function like an online community of internet users. Depending on the website in question, many of these online community members share a common interest such as hobbies, religion, or politics. Once you are granted access to a social networking website you can begin to socialize. This socialization may include reading the profile pages of other members and possibly even contacting them.

The friends that you can make are just one of the many benefits to social networking online. Another one of those benefits includes diversity because the internet gives individuals from all around the world access to social networking sites. This means that although you are in the United States, you could develop an online friendship with someone in Denmark. Not only will you make new friends, but you just might learn a thing or two about new cultures or new languages and learning is always a good thing.

As mentioned, social networking often <ins><ins></ins></ins>involves grouping specific individuals or organizations together. While there are a number of social networking websites that focus on particular interests, there are others that do not. The websites without a main focus are often referred to as “traditional” social networking websites and usually have open memberships. This means that anyone can become a member, no matter what their hobbies, beliefs, or views are. However, once you are inside this online community, you can begin to create your own network of friends and eliminate members that do not share common interests or goals.

As I’m sure you’re aware, there are dangers associated with social networking: data theft and viruses are on the rise. The most prevalent danger though often involves online predators or individuals who claim to be someone that they are not. Although danger does exist with networking online, it also exists with networking out in the real world, too. Just like you’re advised when meeting strangers at clubs and bars, school, or work — you are also advised to proceed with caution online. By being aware of your surroundings and who you are talking to, you should be able to safely enjoy social networking online. Just use common sense and listen to your inner voice; it will tell you when something doesn’t feel right.
